<title>The Port of Málaga is highlighted in Seatrade Miami Conferences </title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The Port of Malaga is gaining reputation as a cruise port in the world, being highlighted, once again, during the conferences celebrated during Seatrade Miami. Daniel J. Hanrahan, President &amp; CEO Celebrity Cruises, talked about the facilities of the Port of Malaga in his speech for the conference “The state of the industry”. Hanrahan explained the development of the cruise facilities in Europe, essential nowadays taking into account the new ships in construction, and highlighted Malaga as a clear example of what needs to be done.

Award to the port facilities
As well as maintaining several meetings during the show, the port of Malaga received the “Dream World Cruise Destinations Award 2009” to the most improved port facilities, an award of special importance, since the cruise lines are the judges of these awards.

The Port of Malaga was represented by Málaga Cruise Bureau, created by Málagaport, a gathering of companies and entities both from the port and the city interested in the cruise traffic in Malaga. The Port of Malaga understands that achieving success in the cruise traffic depends as much on the destination as it does on the port itself. The Port Authority, Costa del Sol Tourist Board, Malaga Chamber of Commerce, Museo Picasso Malaga or Cruceros Malaga –operators of the Passenger Terminal in Malaga- were some of the co-exhibitors.

Latest developments in the port facilities
The Passenger Terminal, which was used for the first time in February 2008, has acquired a great experience in these two years, and operated -very successfully- RCCL’s Navigator of the Seas using Malaga as a homeport last Autumn. The proof of this success is that Adventure of the Seas will be homeporting in Malaga from June to November during 2010.

The Northern Berth of the Passenger Terminal was inaugurated last October, and the gangways for a more comfortable embarking and disembarking are in use since Jan 2010. The berth and the gangways are designed to host the newest cruise ships, with overhanging lifeboats, and up to 350m long.

The 2nd stage of the Passenger Terminal is already under construction, and another Terminal, for smaller and more exclusive cruise ships, will be inaugurated this very year in the quay nearest to the city center, only 5 min walk from the city historical center.

<title>The construction of the second stage of the Eastern Passenger Terminal will began before the end of the year</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The board of directors of Cruceros Málaga S.A., the company operating the Eastern Passenger Terminal since its inauguration in December 2007, awarded last Wednesday the construction of the second stage of the Passenger Terminal. The project consists of two parts: the construction of the building itself, awarded to Sacyr; and its installations (climate and ventilation, electricity, plumbing, bathroom fittings, fire extinction, communications and security, etc.), awarded to Crespo y Blasco S.A. The whole project has a total investment of 15 million €, and will be ready in 18 months.

Features of the project
The second stage of the Eastern Passenger Terminal will have an area of 7,714sqm, distributed in two floors. Its construction will get started before it was planned, due to the great development of the cruise traffic in the Port of Málaga.

When this enlargement will be ready, the Passenger Terminal will have a total area of 13,700sqm and will be able to be used as two independent terminals. The currently existing terminal, which started to operate in January 2008, will receive passengers coming from the Southern berth, and the 2nd stage will receive passengers coming from the Northern berth, which was inaugurated last October, thus making it possible that two cruise ships will be operated at the same time.

The construction of the Eastern Passenger Terminal is based on the current architectonic parameters: the simplicity in its structure to facilitate operations inside the building. The Passenger Terminal responds to basic necessities arising from the embarking and disembarking of the greatest cruise ships.

Cruise Traffic
Some figures of cruise traffic in the Port of Málaga are exposed following this, in which an evolution of this traffic during the last year can be observed, as well as the expected figures for the end of the year:

Great increase of embarked and disembarked passengers
The most important shipping lines in the sector have positioned their cruise ships in the Port of Málaga in 2009. In this way, the vessels ‘Navigator of the Seas’, ‘Grand Voyager’ and ‘Zenith’ started and finished their itineraries in the port installation during this Autumn. At the same time, the cruise ships ‘MSC Lirica’ and ‘MSC Orchestra’, among others, are carrying out partial embarkations and disembarkations.

The Port of Málaga foresees a total figure of 103,896 embarked and disembarked passengers in 2009. This figure represents an increase of 278% related to the 27,471 passengers who embarked and disembarked in Málaga during 2008. This would mean that for each 2 embarked and disembarked passengers in Málaga in 2008, there will be more than 7 in 2009.

First calls
The Port of Málaga foresees to receive a total of 17 new calls by the end of 2009, which means an increase of 13.3% related to last year, in which 15 new calls were received.

<title>The Port of Malaga leads Spanish cruise traffic growth</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>Among the top 5 Spanish cruise ports, Malaga is the port with the greatest growth in cruise ships and passengers between January and June 2009

Cruise traffic in the Port of Malaga keeps rising, as it can be seen in the final figures from January-June 2009.

In the first six months of the year, the Port of Malaga has received 121 cruise ships and 177,513 passengers onboard them, which means an increase of 14.15% in ships and 32.55% in passengers, compared to the same period in 2008.

Malaga’s increase is outstanding among the main Spanish cruise ports -Barcelona, Baleares, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Malaga-, since it has registered the greatest rise in both the number of cruise ships and cruise passengers, when some of the other ports’ figures are even falling.

July keeps rising
July’s figures keep rising, since 16 cruise ships and 26,043 passengers arrived at the Port of Malaga, which means an increase of 34.63%, compared to July 2008. This is of particular interest, since July is traditionally a low-season month.

Autumn Home porting
Autumn is the second high season of the year –after Spring-, and usually the time of the year when home porting increases. This is specially remarkable in 2009, because the Port of Malaga will receive the following regular home porting calls between September and November: MSC Lirica (MSC Cruises): 3 calls; Zenith (Pullmantur): 10 calls; Grand Voyager (Iberocruceros): 8 calls; Navigator of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 7 calls.

Last years’ figures
The great investment made by the Port of Malaga in cruise facilities, and the development of Malaga and its hinterland as an appealing destination, have made cruise traffic become one of the most important in our port, and also an important source of visitors for the area.

Thus, from the 293,000 passengers received in 2007, the figure of 353,000 was achieved in 2008 (+20.5%), and 450,000 are foreseen for the present year (+27.5%).

As for home porting, 12,800 passengers began or ended their cruise in the Port of Malaga in 2007, which meant 4.4% of the year’s total number of passengers. This figure reached 27,500 passengers in 2008, 7.8% of the year’s total number of passengers. It is expected that this figure will widely increase in 2009, mainly due to the increase of home porting calls.

<title>The biggest container ship in the world arrived at the Port of Málaga</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The container ship ‘Edith Maersk’, considered one of the biggest ships in the world, arrived at the Port of Malaga last Friday, where it stayed for 24 hours, becoming the biggest ship in the history of our port.

The ship, coming from Belgium, is 397,71 metres long, and has 56 metres of beam and 16 metres of draught. It can transport 11,000 Teus (more than 7,300 containers). On quay n.º 9, operated by Terminales del Sudeste (belonging to Dragados SPL), between 2,500 and 3,000 Teus were loaded on the ship.

Malaga, Algeciras and Tangier are the only ports in the West Mediterranean with the adequate facilities to host this kind of ships.

The ‘Edith Maersk’ belongs to a series of the biggest vessels of Maersk shipping line, with other 7 ships the same size, and is composed by 17 members of the crew, approximately. Moreover, the composition of the hull paint is more respectful with the environment and offers a lower resistance to the water allowing a reduction in the annual consume of petrol.

The interest of a shipping line
Maersk is the main shipping line operating in the Port of Malaga for container traffic. The company started to use its facilities from the very inauguration of the Container Terminal in 2004.

This relationship has been reinforced during the current year, thanks to the agreement signed by Maersk, Terminales del Sudeste and the port community of Malaga. By this agreement, operational prices have been adjusted as much as possible, and the shipping line guarantees a movement of 27,000 Teus per month during 2009 and 2010.

<title>Container traffic to recover in the Port of Málaga thanks to the efforts of the port community</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The container traffic in the Port of Málaga, affected by the current economical situation, will increase in the next months thanks to the effort of the port community dedicated to this traffic. In this way, the agreement made with Maersk, the main shipping line working in Málaga, guarantees a movement of 27,000 TEUs per month. It means to achieve a total of more than 320,000 TEUs per year.

The reduction of fares in the operations and other services –as far as the law provides-, as well as the reduction of the salaries of the stevedors, are the measures applied to solve the delicate situation this kind of traffic has experimented during the last year, being a more competitive and attractive offer for the great shipping lines of the sector. In this way, the General Director of Dragados SPL, Mr. Víctor Alberola, considers “very positive that Málaga takes into account its competitors”.

The President of the Port Authority of Málaga, Mr. Enrique Linde, declared that “the generosity, responsibility and the perfect understanding among the members of the port community (terminal operator, pilots, tugs and stevedores) allowed to make an attractive offer to recover this kind of traffic in the Port of Málaga”.

On the other hand, the representative of the stevedores, Mr. Salvador Benítez, emphasized the “capacity of negotiation of the workers with the main aim that everybody could stay”, composed by 170 stevedores.

Finally, the General Director of Operations in the Mediterranean for Maersk, Mr. Tommy Nilsson, assured the survival of the Port of Málaga in this kind of traffic, to which he predicts a great future from 2010, “an unthinkable situation only a few months ago, when we had doubts to maintain our movements in the port”. However, “currently, we assure that the Port of Málaga will improve again and reach figures from 2007, and it will become a great port in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar”.

With this agreement, hub traffic will be increased, but it is important not to forget the development of the import-export traffic in the port, thanks to the services by MSC and JSV sipping lines.

<title>Nearly 43,000 passengers arrived at the Port of Málaga in April</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The Port of Málaga received the visit of 42,668 passengers in 34 cruise ships during the last month of April.

Four vessels coincided in the Port of Málaga in April 5th, 16th and 28th, in a more and more common view in the city. Moreover, in April 22th it was foreseen to have four calls but, finally, five cruise ships arrived at the port due to the unexpected visit of another vessel.

First calls
In April, four cruise ships visited the Port of Málaga for the first time. The first one to arrive was ‘Grand Mistral’, belonging to Iberocruceros. The same day, the ship ‘Ocean Village Two’ arrived for the first time at the port.

Later, the cruise ship ‘Bleu de France’, that currently makes an itinerary through the Mediterranean, tied up in the port, coming from Palma, in Majorca. This vessel has foreseen 10 calls more between June and October 2009.

Finally, ‘Celebrity Solstice’, considered the most innovative cruise ship that the shipping line Celebrity and Azamara Cruises has acquired until this moment, also visited the Port of Málaga last April.

Big size cruise ships
The current big size of the cruise ships, capable to host an important number of passengers, could be seen during the four first months of the year. From January to April of last year, about 1,443 passengers per ship arrived at the port. And in 2009 this capacity has increased a 14.5% related to 2008, since 1,653 passengers per ship arrived at the Port of Málaga.

New season
The month of April opens a good spring season for the cruise traffic in the Port of Málaga, in which the arrival of 46 cruise ships during May and June is foreseen. This means the visit of 60,000 tourists to the city, approximately.

Forecast 2009
The Port of Málaga has foreseen the visit of 450,000 passengers on board more than 300 cruise ships during 2009. It means an increase of 25.52% of passengers in relation to last year.

<title>Málaga stands out as an emerged port of the Mediterranean in Seatrade Med</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The Port of Málaga was in the most important show of the cruise ship sector in the Mediterranean, Seatrade Med, celebrated between December 9th and 11th in the Passenger Terminal of the port of Venice.

The President of Málaga Port Authority, Mr. Enrique Linde, as well as the Managing Director of Málagaport, Mr. Sebastián Camps and the Manager of Cruceros Málaga, Mrs. Susana Gutierrez, had some meetings with the most important companies of the market, giving them the opportunity to learn about the facilities related to this kind of traffic and the new projects that will offer a complete service to the cruise ships that chose the city as a destination port.

Shipping lines meetings
Málaga was one of the leading ports in this biennial event because, in the last two years, the port facilities has experimented a great development. This is the reason why the main shipping lines, one more time, were interested in learning about the Passenger Terminal services and the characteristics of its surroundings.

In this way, the representatives of the Port of Málaga, had some meetings with the big shipping lines such as Carnival and MSC Crociere. These companies have observed the improvement of the Passenger Terminal and its South berth, which were inaugurated in December 2007. Moreover, the shipping lines learnt about the evolution of the works in the North berth as well as the basic project of the 2nd phase of the Passenger Terminal, planned by 2009.

On the other hand, the companies with smaller cruise ships were interested too in the new facilities projected by the Port of Málaga to give service to these exclusive vessels. Some of them such as Hansa, Seacloud, Kristina Cruises and Compagnie des Iles du Ponant learnt the details of the future Passenger Terminal placed in the Quay 2, closed to the city centre. Currently, this quay is under construction.

Conferences
In the framework of the activities organised in Seatrade Med, the main representatives of the cruise ship sector took place in some conferences destined to analyse the structure of the market and the future of this kind of traffic in the Mediterranean. These conferences had a great success of participation because of the interest of the debated questions.

The Port of Málaga was mentioned, in some occasions, as an example in the conferences titled “Ports and itineraries”, in which it was talked about the necessary investment of the Mediterranean ports in their facilities to be included in the routes organised by the shipping lines.

In this sense, the Vice president, Commercial and New Business of Royal Caribbean, Mr. John Tercek, emphasized the Port of Málaga investment in the construction of new facilities, being an emerged port, with a lot of possibilities to turn into one of the main destinations in the Mediterranean.

On the other hand, the President of Medcruise, Mr. Laurent Monsaingeon, mentioned the Port of Málaga as a port of great development in the Western Mediterranean.

Medcruise Meeting
After the end of the show, the Association of the Cruise ships ports in the Mediterranean, Medcruise, held a meeting to appoint the new president and the new board of directors, whose term of office is three years long.

<title>Suncruise Andalucía promoted the cruise ship tourism in Seatrade Med</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>Suncruise Andalucía, the association formed by Andalusian ports of Almeria, Algeciras Bay, Cadiz Bay, Huelva, Malaga, Motril and Seville as well as the Chambers of Commerce of Cádiz and Seville attended to the Cruise Ships show Seatrade Med, which took place in Venice from 9th to 11th December.

Suncruise Andalucía, which presidency was assumed by the Port of Motril last 3th December, relieving the Port of Málaga, held a stand with Turismo Andaluz.

In the show, the ports brought their wide offer in tourism and facilities for this type of traffic. Almeria’s natural paradise, Cadiz’s Coast of Light, Cordoba’s Muslim Mosque, Granada’s Alhambra Arabic Palace and Fortress, Huelva’s Doñana Nature Reserve, Jaen’s mountainous spot, Malaga’s Picasso Museum and Costa del Sol or Seville’s Giralda Tower, are just some of the tourist attractions reachable from the seven ports of the organisation, making Andalusia an unequal destination for cruisers.

Suncruise Andalucía
Being conscious of the importance of the tourist attractions of Andalusia and the excellent facilities available, it was created “Suncruise Ansalucía” Association in 1995, for the promotion of the region of Andalusian ports, its facilities and services to such needs.

The association works in two directions: first, it seeks the promotion of Andalusia as a cruise destination; second, it tries to find out and evaluate cruise ship needs in order to improve and develop ports, its facilities and services to such needs.

<title>The Port of Málaga received the visit of the shipping line Aida Cruises last weekend</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>Last weekend, the Port of Málaga received the visit of the Port Operations Manager of Aida Cruises, Mr. Matthias Ludwig, as the winner of a draw organized by Medcruise (Association of Mediterranean cruise ship ports). The prize was a short break for two to Málaga city.

The free draw was announced in December 2007, being in May of the present year when the Association awarded Mr. Ludwig.

Visit to the Passenger Terminal
Some representatives of the Port of Málaga accompanied Mr. Ludwig to the Eastern Passenger Terminal, giving him the opportunity to learn about the current service that the Terminal offers to the passenger and the luggage as well as its good possibilities for the future.

In this way, Ludwig was really taken with the spaciousness of the Passenger Terminal as well as “the good organization of the passenger flow”. Moreover, he pointed the separation between the passenger activity and the luggage activity, because “this adapts so well to the current security rules”.

Málaga as a tourist destination
The surrounding and the tourist offer of a port is one of the most important keys in the choice of a destination by a shipping line. This is the reason why Mr Ludwig enjoyed visiting the historical centre, checking by himself how close the port facilities are to the most famous places such as the Cathedral and the Picasso Museum, among others.

Moreover, they had time to visit some places of the province which expand the tourist offer such as Ronda, Puerto Banús or Marbella.

Aida Cruises
The shipping line Aida Cruises, belonging to Carnival Group, is consolidated as the leader in the German cruise ship market and is characterized by the live colours in the hull of their ships, showing a big smile.

<title> Málaga consolidates as one of the key ports for Costa Crociere</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>(PRESS RELEASE SENT BY THE SHIPPING LINE COSTA CROCIERE)

In the 60th Anniversary of the shipping line,

MALAGA CONSOLIDATES AS ONE OF THE
KEY PORTS FOR COSTA CROCIERE

The relation between Costa and the Port of Málaga started early last century.

During next year, Costa will bring 156,000 passengers to Málaga, who will spend 8,000,000E during their calls.

Málaga, October 28th.- From January to December of next year, 8 of 14 cruise ships of the shipping line, included “Costa Luminosa” which will be inaugurated in June 2009, will make a total of 52 calls in Málaga. This fact will bring 156,000 passengers to the city.

These figures were published last Tuesday during the exchange of commemorative plaques to celebrate the sixty-year-cruising of the company. The president of the Port Authority of Málaga himself, Mr. Enrique Linde, gave a commemorative plaque to Costa Crociere, the shipping line leading in Europe and South America.

The company will celebrate its anniversary in some of the ports which visits frequently, being the Port of Málaga the first one chosen for that. The event took place on board Costa Mediterranea. Some important representatives of the City Council of Málaga, the Regional Government of Andalusia and other local authorities attended the reception.

Later, the audience had lunch in one of the restaurants of the ship. After that, the shipping line explained some of its history and future projects. Finally, the guests could enjoy visiting the cruise ship. Costa Mediterranea, which is 292.50 metres long, has the capacity to host 2,680 passengers and 897 members of the crew.

“From some decades ago, Málaga has been a very important port for us. We can remember that 50 years ago the shipping line made some calls transporting goods, and then passengers”, said Luis Grau, President of Costa Crociere in Spain.

He added that “the excellent relation between Costa Crociere and Málaga” is not recent; historical documents such as old photographs and navigation charts show what the cruise ships where like 50 years ago.

During his short speech, Mr. Luis Grau pointed that Costa arrived at the Port of Málaga in 1924 with a ship loaded of goods. After that, in 1966, the ship called Anna C made the first call with tourists. Currently, 42 years later, 8 cruise ships of the fleet visit Málaga.

On one of the visits of Anna C to the Port of Málaga, February 9th 1966, the cruise ship received a barrel filled with Málaga wine, which was refilled in following calls.

Costa Mediterranea, where the company celebrated its 60th anniversary, was not the only Costa cruise in the port on that day: Costa Victoria, which has visited the city 9 other times this years, will visit us 2 more times in November.

The cruise ships visiting the Port of Málaga during 2009 are Costa Serena, Costa Marina, Costa Europa, Costa Romantica, Costa Atlantica, Costa Mediterranea and Costa Luminosa. The last one will be inaugurated next year. Costa Cruceros will connect Málaga city with other destinations in Europe such as Canarias, Morocco, Madeira, Italiy, France, England, Portugal, Holland and, in America, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Cabo Verde.

<title>The Port of Malaga receives nearly 8,000 people aboard four cruise ships.</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The Port of Malaga received today the visit of 7866 people, who stopped in the city aboard four cruise ships. Of this figure, a total of 5906 are cruisers, while the rest belongs to the crew members, which will also take the opportunity to visit the capital.

The world&apos;s largest ship, the Independence of the Seas, in line with other smaller ones, like the Coral, whose presence at the Port of Malaga is now habitual. Moreover, the cruise ships Astoria and Black Watch has also visited the capital today.

Independence of the Seas
The largest cruise ship in the world has been the first to arrive at the port this morning, beginning at 7:00 pm. The ship will remain docked at the Dique de Levante until 16:30 hours, at which point it will depart for Lisbon (Portugal).

This is the fourth time that the Independence of the Seas stops at the Port of Malaga during 2008, causing the same excitement that the first time (due to its vast size) and it will be its last visit in the current year.

Astoria
The cruise ship Astoria has made its stop in the early hours of the morning, from the Bay of Cadiz. More than half the passengers had landed in the installations of the port of Malaga, where the Maritime Station have offered them the necessary services.

Black Watch
The ship Black Watch, which is named after a famous Scottish infantry regiment, will remain in port until 18:00, when they depart for their next destination: Messina.

Coral
Finally, the cruise ship Coral, owned by the Louis Cruises, made his stopover in the port of Malaga from 16.00 hours, from Almeria.

The Coral has done a total of 32 stopovers in the capital during the year, and is considered one of the most frequent visitors of the Port of Malaga.</description>

<title>The lighthouse of the spanish port of Málaga to be twinned with the lighthouse of Saint Agustin in Florida</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>The lighthouse of the Port of Málaga (“La Farola”) was visited last Saturday 30th by representatives of the city of San Agustin, Florida, and representatives of the Port of Málaga. Both cities have chosen their emblematic lighthouses for their twinning.

In order to prepare their twinning, the Commissioners of the city of San Agustin visited the lighthouse of the Port of Málaga with some representatives of the Port Authority of Málaga, the City Council, the University of Malaga and Astilleros Nereo shipyard. Right before this, they paid a visit the historical centre of the city, which is adjacent to the Port.

The President of the Port Authority of Málaga, Mr. Enrique Linde, explained the distribution and operations of the different port facilities. On the other hand, the person in charge of the lighthouse, Mr. José Manuel López Chorro, explained how the lighthouse works. The Commissioners were very interested in the current security systems of navigation, installed in the lighthouse, as well as in the old house of the lighthouse-keeper, located in the lower part of the building.

After the visit, the representatives exchanged gifts, sealing their new friendship. Then, the Commissioners left for Astilleros Nereo shipyard, where they could see the assemble of the keel in the vessel Gálveztown. The ship is being built as a symbol of the union of these two cities.

<title>The Port of Málaga will host an International Congress of the Cruise Industry</title>
	       						<link></link>
<description>Next September 19th and 20th, the Port of Málaga will hold an International Congress of Cruise ships called “Cruise Industry: an outlook. From great luxury to democratization”. The main goal of this event is to offer a comprehensive vision about the industry in a privileged environment, because the city of Malaga has become one of the main destinations in Spain and Europe chosen by the most important shipping lines.

During the conference, the representatives of the most important cruise companies, as well as from the government institution Ports of Spain and Medcruise will talk about the current situation of the cruise industry in the Mediterranean and Europe. They will discuss the two sides of the sector, existing nowadays. On one hand, the luxury of navigating onboard a vessel in a private and exclusive atmosphere, due to its small size and the high price of the journey. On the other hand, the democratization of the cruise ship, with dimensions capable to host a great number of passengers. The prices are more affordable to the middle class, giving the opportunity to enjoy this kind of voyages in the best conditions.

The President of Medcruise, Mr. Laurent Monsaingeon; the Subdirector of International Relations and Cooperation of Ports of Spain, Mr. Manuel Gómez; the European Vicepresident of Royal Caribbean International, Mr. Robin Shaw; the General Manager of Fleet Operations of Carnival UK, Mr. Philip Naylor; the Director of Marine Operations of Silversea, Mr. Hugues Lamy; and the Shorex Department representative of MSC Cruises, Mr. Nicola Cesaro, are some of the speakers that will participate in the conference next September. Moreover, the Managing Director of Málagaport, Mr. Sebastián Camps will take part in the event to speak about the growth of the cruise traffic in the Port of Malaga in the last years.

At the end of the conferences, people attending the International Congress of Cruiseships will have the opportunity to visit the historical centre of the city. This guided trip will allow them to learn about the tourist attractions that the town offers to passengers arriving in Malaga by cruise ship.

The conferences are directed to representatives from national and international ports, cruise lines, travel agents and to everybody taking part in the cruise industry. Information about registration: www.malagaport.net / +34 952 12 50 13.
