The port of Málaga, with its long history, is undergoing continuous change, and has successfully adapted to the new marketplace demands and the interests of Málaga itself, as well as its people, throughout its history.

The port of Málaga is today an economic and logistical centre, generating wealth for the city and employment for its inhabitants.
 
Moreover, the changes undergone by the port are now consolidated as an important reference point within the maritime and touristic sector of Southern Europe.

The most recent challenge faced by the Port of Málaga has involved two major Plans:

  1. The Port Extension Plan, , which provides greater operational capacity and enables large boats to be moored while encouraging new traffic.
  2. The Special City-Port Plan, , with its focus on a grand vision for the future in terms of relations between the city and its Port, with the Port Authority granting the space required for new leisure, cultural and commercial locations.

The Port of Málaga is, therefore, generating an increasingly significant interest. This necessitates its own structure, enabling it to carry out communication, promotional and marketing activities on an international level and to project to the outside world the advantages and qualities of this strategic, natural, geographic and economic area.

Similarly, local residents need to become more familiarized with their port and what it means in terms of progress and wealth creation for the area, involving as many City institutions as possible, including the business network in an exchange of views.

To this end, málagaport, a group of public and private companies and organizations, has been set up with the aim of channelling all existing concerns related to the planning and promotion of the Port of Málaga and its area of influence.
